Scales Don’t Tell Your Weight Loss Journey

Healthy meal comparing low-carbohydrate and low-fat options for managing type 2 diabetes.

When most people begin a weight loss or fitness journey, the first thing they do is step on the scales. It feels like the quickest way to understand where you’re starting from and how far you need to go. And yes, it can be a useful tool — but it’s not the full picture. I’ll explain later how I approach this with my clients.

The first step is accepting the number you see. You might feel frustrated or disappointed, but the reality is you can’t change the past — only what you do moving forward. The number on the scale is only one part of your progress, yet many people allow it to control how they think and feel. I completely understand this, because I did exactly the same thing during my own 30kg weight loss journey.

When the number drops, motivation skyrockets. But when it increases, many people begin doubting themselves, questioning their choices or even giving up because it feels too hard. But here’s a different way to look at it: what if you stopped letting the scale dictate the success of your journey?

Your “Why” Matters More Than the Scale

Think about the real reason you want to start this journey. Maybe it’s fitting into a certain clothing size, improving your health, supporting your mental wellbeing or achieving a fitness goal. Let that be your motivation — not a number that can fluctuate for a hundred different reasons.

The Mind Is Ready Before the Body

One challenge many people face is that mentally, they’re ready for change — but the physical results take time to show. This is why patience is so important. When I speak with new clients, I always acknowledge how powerful it is to be mentally ready, but I also remind them that the physical side needs time to catch up.

From my experience, and based on feedback from clients, how fast this happens depends on changes in sleep, water intake, nutrition and movement. Everyone’s journey looks different. And I know many people compare their progress to others — especially when the scale doesn’t move. This often comes from unrealistic expectations or seeing what someone else has achieved. I’ve spoken about this in a previous video, “Dangers of comparing yourself to others’ results,” which explains how comparison can help or hurt your journey.

Better Ways to Measure Your Progress

Here are other signs that show you’re on the right track — even when the scales don’t move:

  • Energy levels: Increased energy is one of the biggest indicators of positive progress. Many clients say this is what kept them going.
  • Visual changes: Taking photos — even if only you see them — is incredibly helpful. Ask someone you trust to take them for you.
  • Sleep quality: Getting 7–8 hours helps regulate hunger, supports better food choices and reduces stress.
  • Mental health: Feeling clearer, less stressed and more positive is a huge achievement and powerful motivator.

How I Track Progress With Clients

When I start working with someone, we begin with measurements — then weight. But we don’t stop there. We also track muscle mass, body fat, water percentage, visceral fat and body age. From there, we set short- and long-term goals, including month-to-month milestones. This structure keeps clients focused and motivated.

As time goes on, confidence grows. Goals get achieved, new goals are created, and clients start noticing changes they never expected — like muscle gain, reduced body fat or improvements in body age. Notice how none of this relies solely on scale weight. The scale doesn’t show your full story.

The Real Wins Beyond the Number on the Scale

Imagine twelve months from now, you’ve lost 30kg. Someone says, “Wow, you look amazing — you’ve lost so much weight!” You might respond with:

  • “Yes, and I can now fit into size 10 or 32-inch jeans.”
  • “I can run around with my kids again.”
  • “I’m wearing clothes I only dreamed of fitting into.”
  • “I feel incredible — my mind is clearer, and my depression and mood swings have improved so much.”

These are real responses I’ve heard from clients. These wins matter far more than a number on the scales. The drop in weight is a bonus — the real transformation is everything else you gain along the way.
