Pick your Short Battles for Long Term Results

When you decide it’s time to begin a weight loss or health and fitness journey, you’ve made a powerful mental shift. Something inside you has said it’s time for change — maybe a light-bulb moment, or maybe you’re simply tired of feeling sluggish, unhealthy or unhappy in your body.

Whatever your reason is, it matters, and it has meaning for you. That’s what gives your journey purpose.

Why Your First Decision Matters

Making the decision to change is a big moment. It’s you consciously choosing to adjust parts of your lifestyle because what you were doing before has led you to where you are now. How quickly you move forward depends completely on how much you’re willing to change.

And when I say change, I mean simple but important areas like your sleep routine, hydration, nutrition and exercise. Some habits will feel easier than others — and that’s completely normal. You might be great with water intake but struggling with sleep. Maybe you’re nailing your exercise but finding nutrition harder. Wherever the challenge is, that’s exactly where your focus needs to go.

Taking a Long-Term View of Your Progress

The next step is thinking about what you want your long-term habits to look like across those four areas. If sleep is a struggle right now, work on slowly increasing your hours. If you need to drink more water, you don’t go from 600ml to 3 litres overnight — you’d be running to the toilet all day and you wouldn’t stay consistent.

Your long-term goals are important because they represent your “why”. I always tell my clients that this whole process is about patience and consistency. The results will come — but only when you treat this like a lifestyle change, not a quick fix.

Challenges like 6-week programs or a sugar-free month can be great, but only if you approach them as a kickstart, not a temporary solution. Once the challenge ends, you want that momentum to keep you going with sleep, water, nutrition or movement.

Choosing Short-Term Battles for Long-Term Success

The key is choosing small, short-term battles that lead to long-term results. We’re all human. We feast and we fast. If you have a special occasion and your nutrition isn’t perfect — enjoy it. Then simply return to your normal routine afterwards.

The same goes for training. When you’ve found something you enjoy, you’ll naturally stay more consistent. But missing a day or two doesn’t undo your progress. Maybe you’re away, maybe you’re busy, or maybe your body just needs a rest. Listen to it. Don’t punish yourself for living life.

Why Sleep and Water Matter More Than You Think

Sleep and hydration are two of the biggest players in fat loss and overall health. When you miss out on sleep, you feel it the next day — your cravings increase, your hunger signals change, and your insulin levels can rise.

I go deeper into this in my video “Importance of Sleep for Weight Loss”, which I highly recommend watching. I’ll include it below.

Water intake can be challenging too. In summer, drinking water might feel easy, but winter can make it harder. Personally, I struggle with plain water, so I mix it up with sparkling water and lemon — simple, but it keeps me consistent.

Finding What Works for You

Your job is to find what keeps you consistent. When you stay patient, commit to your long-term vision and choose small battles that move you forward, everything begins to click.

And when you slip up — because we all do — give yourself honest feedback instead of guilt. Use it as a lesson for next time. This is why it’s called a journey. I’ve stumbled plenty of times in my own, but every time it taught me something that helped me grow.

When you finally achieve your goal, you’ll realise just how much your lifestyle has shifted — and that’s exactly what helps you maintain your progress without stressing about every little detail.
